‍LaPD Solutions created the term the “Moccasin Approach”TM based on the above saying which is usually said to be of Native American origin. From our research it in fact first appeared in a poem called “Judge Softly”, which was written by Mary T. Lathrap in 1895. The poem suggested we should see things from the eyes of others first.

‍Regardless of its origin, we have taken the concept and applied it to how we believe Emotional Intelligence (EI) should be used as the fundamental approach to all people communication and interaction. Whether people are leaders, managers, peers or subordinates, the hierarchy, position or role just doesn’t matter in this context! In its fullest form, the Moccasin Approach (MA) is designed to either greatly improve organisational culture, or create a superb organisational culture regardless of role or hierarchical position. 

‍If we make a conscious effort to see things from the perspective of others before we communicate with them, we may well see things differently and therefore communicate, act or approach the situation differently. We will do so due to the feeling of empathy for that person’s perspective, and in some cases, may even decide to go to a different person all together due to what we have considered.   

To change a culture and move people from defensive, negative or even sabotage tendencies, to a more positive, sharing and collaborative approach, we need to identify what your organisation sees as “Core Values”. We need to clarify what behaviours the organisation expects to see their people evidence daily. People need to learn to live by those values and behaviours and bring positive change to the culture.

(Understand before seeking to be understood)

‍The Moccasin ManagerTM, as part of the Moccasin ApproachTM, works on the principle that we must see things from the other person’s perspective before we act. We must understand their likes, dislikes, hopes, dreams, aspirations, concerns and even fears, so we are able to communicate with them with all types of empathy. 

‍However, this does not mean that we pander to every wish others may have, or avoid asking them to perform tasks or duties they may not enjoy or not feel so competent about. What we suggest is that their perspective is taken into account and balanced with the relevant organisational requirements and the situation at the time. 

In short, a Moccasin Manager must always remember that they have a duty of care to both their people AND their organisational duties. This requires a carefully balanced approach considering emotion and logic together. 

This challenge needs discussing as sometimes we need to make quick and difficult decisions. We need to practice this Moccasin Approach concept and  think carefully of the steps we take. We discuss aspects around this so that Moccasin Managers can approach such challenges.

A Moccasin Manager will manage their colleagues feelings, show empathy, they will respect their viewpoint and beliefs, but they will also be able to contextualise it to the given situation. 

As we all know, when we are fire fighting there is often little time to consider everything and time may well be of the essence, so asking people to do things quicker than they like, with less resources or whatever we don’t have at that time, may not sit well, but sometimes needs must!
